Start here: Ask the contractor to remove tools, protective coverings and building debris before the cleaning visit. Confirm that paint, grout, caulk and finishes have cured enough to be cleaned safely.

Contractor Handoff Checklist

  • Complete sanding, cutting, drilling and touch-up work
  • Remove lumber, packaging, fasteners and building debris
  • Remove or identify temporary floor and surface protection
  • Label delicate, newly finished or manufacturer-restricted surfaces
  • Confirm water and power are available
  • Replace or inspect HVAC filters as appropriate
  • Identify rooms outside the work zone affected by traveling dust

First Pass: Remove Loose Dust

The first pass should work from high areas downward so settled dust is not repeatedly redistributed. Reachable ledges, trim, fixtures, doors, cabinet exteriors and horizontal surfaces are addressed before final floor cleaning.

A standard household dusting pass is rarely enough. Fine particles may settle again after the first removal, especially when the project affected several rooms.

Second Pass: Detail the Finished Space

  • Wipe cabinets, shelving and built-ins
  • Clean fixtures, switches, doors and trim
  • Remove approved adhesive or label residue
  • Clean interior glass, sills and tracks where included
  • Address bathrooms and kitchens affected by the project
  • Vacuum edges, corners and accessible vents
  • Clean flooring with products appropriate for the new finish

Final Pass: Inspect After Dust Settles

After the main cleaning, allow time for remaining airborne dust to settle and inspect the space under good lighting. Check countertops, dark fixtures, window ledges, baseboards and floor edges where fine residue is easiest to see.

If the project disturbed painted surfaces in a pre-1978 property, ask the contractor whether lead-safe requirements apply and follow the project’s containment and clearance instructions rather than treating it as ordinary dust.
